A SEVERA e o 13º CONDE DO VIMIOSO

Chorai, fadistas chorai

Que a Severa se finou

O gosto que o FADO tinha

Tudo com ela acabou

A SEVERA and the 13th COUNT OF VIMIOSO

Even though in his novel "A SEVERA " Júlio Dantes changed the name of his great love, at the request of the President of the municipal council Hintze Ribeiro and the Count of Vimioso’s family, the novelist wrote a play for the stage, performed for the first time in the theatre now known as S. Luis (at the time it was called Teatro D. Amélia). The alteration made by the novelist, in which the great love of Maria Severa – 13th Count of Vimioso D. Francisco de Paula Portugal e Casro (1817-1865) – was replaced by the Count de Marialva, was rather ridiculous (if you will forgive me Doutor De-antes). The last Count de Marialva, D. Pedro José Vito de Menezes Coutinho, had, in good slang –“ kicked the bucket”, in Paris in 1823, when Severa was three years old. However, I was unable to find out if there were records of “paedophiles” at the time.

In the tavern of Rosário dos óculos ( rua do Capelão ), our singer made the acquaintance of the Count of Vimioso. But Severa had no fixed place for playing. He sang fado in the Cegueta tavern, and at the Café da Bola, but, as rumour would have it, his favourite place to sing FADO was the café which belonged to Joaquim Silva (member of the group who jump on the back of the bull in bull fights), near the bull ring in Campo de Santana, where the Count met up with friends and aficionados of the art of bull fighting.
The 13th Count de Vimioso was a fine gentleman, distinguished in the art of working with bulls. For many years he was applauded in the old Bull Ring in Campo de Santana.
It would appear that Maria Severa lived with the Count for the three last years of her life. She died for love of him. She was buried in a common grave, as stated in her death certificate in the cemetery of Alto de S. João, in book Nº 3, page 117. She died of tuberculosis, with no payment for the many tears she shed, perhaps because this was to be her destiny.

Cry, fadista, cry
With the passing of Severa
The very taste of FADO
Has left us
